'The Vampire Diaries' Delena dish: Will Elena admit to feelings for Damon?
Stefan and Elena may be "The Vampire Diaries" golden couple, but things are going to get worse for these two before they get better. Stefan is headed down a very bad road with Klaus, and even when Stefan does return to Mystic Falls (whenever that may be) he's hardly going to be in any shape to take Elena to the homecoming dance.
So, of course, the question on everyone's mind: Where does that leave Damon?
In last week's episode, Damon insisted that Elena admit that she was worried about him, because, as he said, if Stefan does get his act together, Damon doesn't want Elena to forget how close they've grown while little bro has been gone. Their friendship certainly deepened over the summer, though all Elena would admit to was that she cares whether Damon lives or dies. It's not exactly the stuff of romance novels.
"There's yet to be an admission of that chemistry from her part," executive producer Julie Plec said in a Q&A that Zap2it attended on Wednesday. In the Oct. 6 episode, "Disturbing Behavior," Elena's refusal to admit to her feelings for Damon may be addressed.
"Next week's episode kind of illuminates that a little bit," Plec confirms. "A lot's gone unsaid. There's a big elephant in the room as far as all these fun little stolen moments and romantic banter and their dynamic with each other. It hasn't gone unnoticed with other people."
With Stefan continuing to self-destruct (and to other-people-destruct, too), Elena's besties aren't going to let her stay in denial too long. "[As Elena is back] in Mystic Falls trying to pick up the pieces and get on with her life, it's the kind of thing that her friends and her loved ones are going to [point out]," Plec says. "We're going to have some fun with that."
It's about time!

Vampire Diaries' Ian Somerhalder on Damon's Big Surprise, Elena's Happiness and Twisty Bromance
With Ripper Stefan out on the rampage, Damon was left with quite the predicament in the season premiere of The CW’s The Vampire Diaries (Thursdays at 8/7c). Not only did his bro kill his girlfriend — RIP Andie Star — but Stefan also left behind his lady love with Damon. Will Damon take advantage of his new closeness with Elena? Or will he be too busy grieving his reporter pal?
TVLine spoke with Ian Somerhalder about what’s going on in Damon’s head and what Stefan’s ugly side will mean for Damon and Elena.
TVLINE | Will Andie’s death have any effect on Damon?
She was fun and beautiful and smart. He actually liked Andie a lot, regardless of the fact that he compelled her to do and say what he wanted her to do. She still had a mind of her own, which is awesome. So he’s upset, but really what Andie’s death is about is telegraphing to Damon the actual lengths to which Stefan will go. That surprises the hell out of Damon. It’s a setback for him. It’s quite the annoyance.
TVLINE | Elena is still hell-bent on going after Stefan. Where does that leave Damon?
Elena’s a very strong-willed young individual. Elena’s going to do whatever Elena wants to do. She’s very persuasive, and I mean that in the most positive of senses. He’s going to try and help her in any way he can. He truly wants to be able to help her. He wants her to be happy. There’s nothing Damon won’t do for Elena’s happiness.
TVLINE | Having seen how dark Stefan can get, does that make Elena see Damon differently?
It doesn’t hurt Damon. It has the ability to make Elena and Damon bond, and it allows Damon to have to really protect her, even from his own brother. So yes, it has to have a profound effect on the way she perceives Damon. Absolutely. It makes her more connected to him by the virtue of the fact that he’s actually become a sounding board. He’s very well-versed on this type of behavior. He has the ability to help her understand what’s going on. That comes in handy in a very big way.
TVLINE | They didn’t really address the kiss in the premiere. Does he even remember it?
No, he remembers. You find out later he remembers. What’s funny is that some were saying, “How was this passionate kiss?” and I was thinking, “I don’t know if anyone noticed, but Damon was pale and sweaty and coughing up blood.”
TVLINE | It wasn’t the sexiest of situations.
Exactly! It wasn’t the sexiest of situations. I wouldn’t say it came from a place of passion. I would say it probably came from a place more of compassion.
TVLINE | Is there a part of Damon that feels like he’s being strung along by Elena?
I don’t think so at all. Elena’s intentions are nothing but pure. Elena’s intentions have nothing to do with Damon, really. She cares about Damon, but she’s not playing him in any way, shape or form. I can’t speak directly for [executive producers] Kevin [Williamson] and Julie [Plec], but that’s not Elena’s nature.
TVLINE | What’s coming up for Damon and Alaric?
The bromance has some twists and turns. At the end of the day, Alaric is Damon’s bro. It’s gotta be difficult dealing with Damon.
TVLINE | I hear he’s not too keen on the fact that Damon and Elena are growing so close.
He’s not too keen because he’s a smart man, and he feels a responsibility to protect her. He feels a responsibility to make sure she OK, and Damon doesn’t even pretend to make the best decisions in his life. He just does it. Alaric having that trepidation and concern for Elena’s well-being is very, very well-justified. I couldn’t argue with Ric, but Damon could until the cows come home.
TVLINE | How will Damon be letting out some of his frustration?
Damon’s way of letting out frustration and excess energy is not that different than anybody’s. [But] what’s different about it is that his is quite destructive at times, and it leads to someone getting hurt. Because of that, Elena won’t stand for it. She wants nothing to do with it. So that makes it difficult for him. He’s frustrated to no end on many levels, and now he can’t even go out and get his frustration out or express himself the way he’s used to. The blood is what makes it easier to cope with. So, it’s a tough time for Mr. Damon.

Vampire Diaries' Ian Somerhalder Says Damon Is, Like, So Pissed
The Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder can sum up Damon Salvatore's attitude early on this season in one word: Pissed. Not only is his brother on a serious downward spiral, but now Damon is tasked with being the sole person to protect the woman that the Salvatores love, Elena. TVGuide.com checked in with Somerhalder who explained the three things viewers need to know about Damon in Season 3.
Fall Preview: Get scoop on your favorite returning shows
3. He's angry. Damon always wanted his brother to feed on humans just like he does, so now that he's doing so, what's the big problem? Stefan's only hanging with Klaus these days. "He tried for two seasons to get his brother to do what Damon was all about: destroy everything in [their] path ... and eat and munch on every sorority girl he can reach. He tried for a really long time to make that happen to no avail and now Stefan's running around doing that exact thing, but with Klaus, who is a prick. And he tried to kill Damon! So you can see where his frustration comes from."
8 scoops about Glee, The Good Wife, Vampire Diaries and more from the Emmys red carpet
2. He doesn't want to save the day. Although Damon would do anything to protect Elena and Stefan (and maybe a few others), he does not want to be the resident hero. "He just never saw his life going down this road," Somerhalder says. "He's the anti-hero and even though he's supposed to take on this role he doesn't want it."
Vampire Diaries' Wesley: Damon is a Puppy in comparison to what Stefan is morphing into
1. He's no longer convinced he should be with Elena. Damon is in love with Elena and her boyfriend is on the road, so it's prime opportunity to swoop in, right? Not quite. "I know a lot of people would like for that to happen, but the reality of it is that he's done some pretty messed up stuff," Somerhalder says. "Even if he does get in her good graces he'll always do something to screw it up." Also, they're polar opposites. "She wants a life of peace with no death and he's [into] destructive killing. It's like trying to watch a lion and a gazelle be friends, it's just not meant to be. They're just two different animals. One is a predator and one is prey."
Don't forget to watch episode 3.02 "The Hybrid" tonight!!! :)

The Vampire Diaries' Nina Dobrev on Doppelgangers, the Untold Dangers of Degrassi, and Feeling Traumatized For a Living
For a character who doesn't have parents or seem to attend school on a regular basis, The Vampire Diaries' Elena has one of the richest, most exciting lives of anyone on television. Over the course of three days she'll thwart ancient curses, witness close friends getting murdered, and attend at least four town-wide parties without taking so much as a nap. Add to that an even more intense (and awesome) evil doppelgänger, and actress Nina Dobrev's a pretty busy lady on set. As much as I may or may not make fun of Elena in my recaps, it's never lost on me just how great Dobrev's work is, so I was thrilled when she set aside a few minutes this week to talk about how she does what she does on such a regular basis.
A lot of horrible stuff has happened to Elena in a very short amount of time. How do you keep track of what her emotional state is supposed to be on any given day? Like do you have a flowchart or something?
Kind of, yeah. I keep a separate script for each of my characters. So Elena has her own script and Katherine has her own script. And I go through every script— A lot of preparation and time goes into breaking it down and charting the emotional range and what's going on with each character, and then not only what's going on with them in this episode but over the last season. You know, one person could die in one episode and then another person could die in another episode and then you have to incorporate that and put it into effect.
The timeline is so confusing to me— It's never really clear how much time has gone by.
Well, we establish in—I think—the next episode that it's been about a year since the show started.
Incredible.
So, the last two seasons have been one year. So each season then is about six months.
Julie Plec said that having you play dual roles is kind of hard on the production department because it takes a lot out of you, plus there's a lot of planning that has to happen. But do you find it actually kind of refreshing to play someone different for change, especially someone as awesome as Katherine?
The thing is, it's definitely hard on production and hard on me in many ways. It makes the show very interesting to have the dual roles and see the different kinds of relationships between Katherine and Stefan and Damon versus Elena and Stefan and Damon. So having doppelgängers makes for a good story, but it is hard to schedule around it. And because there's such a physical change—not to mention an emotional and mental change—I have to really shift gears and become another person each scene we shoot, and so it is a lot of work.
I'm a little harsh on Elena in my recaps. For the most part she's pretty self-assured, but then she goes and makes some pretty questionable decisions sometimes. Do you ever read the script and go, like, "Seriously, Elena?"
Yeah, I do. I'm very much an audience member as well as a cast member. I watch and read the show very critically and sometimes Elena does—I mean she's a strong woman and she's very courageous—but sometimes she makes some very impulsive decisions. Ultimately she's making those decisions for a reason. And I know and trust that the writers have an ultimate path that they want her to go through, a journey that they want her to experience. So there's a reason behind every little line and detail.
We know that Elena doesn't want to become a vampire, but does she have ANY goals in life? It's not clear.
That's a very good question. She doesn't want to be a vampire but she does want to have a family. Honestly, she just wants to be normal. She's realized after everything she's been through that she just wants to be normal and she just wants to be treated normally and have a regular existence. But planning or making any long-term life goals has been very difficult because people are dying around her all the time. She's going through so much on any given day that she just doesn't have the capacity to think about three months from now when everything around her is blowing up in her face at all times.
I think you're one of the best criers on television, especially in this last episode, "The Birthday," where you had that astonishing close-up. Is that sort of thing harder to do than, like, fight choreography or something more physical?
Thank you, question mark? [Laughs.] I don't know if it's harder. Let me put it this way. I remember one of the first times I ever read a script—I don't know if it was for this show or if it was for something else—but reading on the page that the character starts crying, when it's the first time you have to do it, it's always terrifying. Because there's, like, a pressure on you to deliver. But if you really understand what's happening in the scene and you really feel it and you're in the moment, it just happens and you can't put pressure on it, you have to just really be there and experience what's going on. And I can get really emotional if I really am sad about something and if I really am invested in something. So it's not that it's hard, it's just being committed more than anything. I think you just have to be committed and really go for it and really be open to feel and care and hurt.
After days like that—and that's part of why this job is very difficult, because forget about the 16-hour days that we do every day. Forget about the night work. Emotionally it's draining. You work these hours, but you're crying or you're hurting or you're running and people are dying and I have to emotionally go through all this every day, tenfold. I haven't personally in my real life had many people close to me die, but my characters have, and I've had to live that as though it's real. And it can take a really big emotional toll on someone. That's why when I get home at night all I want to do is sleep and rest and kind of curl up in my cocoon, the safe haven of my bed, and just shut out the world because I'm traumatized. Living Elena's life can traumatize you. [Laughing]
What's the more dangerous environment for a teenager, Mystic Falls High School or Degrassi High?
Oh dear. I think Mystic Falls is more dangerous for your life. Your chance of dying is much larger in Mystic Falls. But Degrassi is an equally dangerous school because you're in danger of being corrupted and having bad things happen to you—there's a lot of drugs, people getting shot. A lot happens at Degrassi. You know, to be honest, if I was a parent and I saw the track record of either of those schools, I would move.
What are you doing with all those Teen Choice Awards surfboards? Are you like building a new wing on your house?
No, and you know what, it's false advertising. They don't actually give you all the surfboards that you win.
Bummer!
They give you one surfboard and they write down on the surfboard all the other awards that you won.
Wait, the awards from all the different years on just one surfboard? Like they ask for it back and write the new ones on there?
No—so for last year I think we won like eight or nine awards and I got one surfboard that listed all of the awards on the one surfboard and this year we won six? So I'm going to get another one that says the six awards that we won on it. So I'll only have two. But still! It's really cool, not to discount how cool it is. It's really, really, really awesome and what I'm going to do is—I have an office in my house—and I'm going to mount the surfboards on the ceiling of my office.
Well, that's fine, I guess. I was picturing like thirty surfboards somewhere in your home that you have to store.
That's what I thought! And I bought my house with that in mind. I was like looking for a house and for the requirements, the realtors were like, What do you want? Do you want a pool? How much square footage do you want? I just said I need enough room for the thirty surfboards that I'm hoping to win someday. And then I got two and I was really disappointed because I'd gotten the square footage for thirty. And now I'm going to have to try and win more awards just so I can fill that space.
Only twenty-eight more seasons of Vampire Diaries to go!
Exactly.
The Vampire Diaries airs Thursdays (Tonight!!) at 8pm on The CW.
Thanks to TV.com for the interview :)

Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev talk 'Delena' on the 'Vampire Diaries' set: Will they hook up in Season 3?
The last time we saw Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev), they shared a sweet but rather chaste kiss. Now that Stefan has hit the road with Klaus, leaving his brother at home with his girlfriend, are we going to see the chemistry between Damon and Elena heat up even more?
Zap2it hit "The Vampire Diaries" set to talk to Ian and Nina about the journey that Damon and Elena are on together this season. First of all, we're sorry to say that even though she owns the Salvatore house on paper, Elena and Damon are no longer roomies.
"She's back at Chez Gilbert," Ian says. "It's a shame that she's not at Chez Salvatore."
That doesn't mean Damon doesn't have his eye on her, though. In fact, as Ian tells us, Damon is making plans to get comfortable in Mystic Falls for a very long time. He's so in love with Elena that he's willing to spend the next seventy years keeping her safe. "Oddly enough, he's not chasing her," Somerhalder says. "He's pissed about what's going on. This is not the way he saw his life at all. Now he's stuck in Mystic Falls taking care of Elena... obviously she will age and grow up and have a career and a family and all that stuff, but he'll have to be there, watching her."
Sounds like true love to us! Or, you know... stalking.
Nina says that Season 3 will be a major coming-of-age story for Elena, as she becomes a woman and "her relationship with herself changes." We're also going to see -- at least for a little while -- a more reliable Damon.
"Delena have decided to form a truce and team together for the greater good, and find Stefan," Nina says. "They're also finding out about what kind of person Stefan is together. He's her shoulder to cry on and he's there for her for the first time. It's kind of like the roles have reversed... and he's rising to the occasion which is really sweet, and nice."
Of course, he's still Damon, and if he suddenly turned into a trustworthy good Samaritan, we'd all get awfully bored. "They are close," Ian says. "They're really close. It's just that Damon will, inexorably, always do something to screw it up. He'll hurt her, he'll kill her brother, he'll burn her house down."
He's not going to burn her house down, but we're hearing that once again, Damon will do something dangerous and violent -- in episode 4, "Disturbing Behavior," he may lose his cool and snap... as in, a neck. Elena won't be too pleased about that, we're sure.
Sigh. Some vampires never change.
"Damon gives Elena things that Stefan doesn't, necessarily," Ian says. "He makes her smile. It's great to see Elena smile."
Does that mean that the always-angsty Elena is going to get a moment to have a little fun? Heck yeah. "Everyone has their breaking point, so she's going to reach it, and then she's just going to say 'Eff it!'" Nina teases.
"She lightens up," Ian agrees. "There's only so much doom and gloom, there are only so many times she can cry before she says, 'You know what? Screw this. I want to smile.'"
The show returns Thursday (yesterday!) at 8 p.m. EST on The CW, but in the meantime, you can watch our video with Ian and Nina below. Keep checking back with Zap2it for more from our interviews with them next week!
Thanks to ZAP2it for the interview :) Just love this too :)

'Vampire Diaries': Ian Somerhalder talks nude practical joke played on Nina Dobrev; plus more season 3 teases
Well we sure get a lot of interviews today before the Season 3 premiere of The Vampire Diaries tonight.
Here's a new Ian Somerhalder interview.
It happened when they were filming the scene where a naked, sudsy Damon surprises Elena. “Well, you know, you open up the cover page of season 3, episode 1, and it’s, like, the first half a page, Damon’s already naked. So I’d spent almost two days on set completely naked, which is kinda awesome, because as if I wasn’t close enough to our crew members, I feel really close after that,” he laughs. “So our first AD Rudy, at like 8 o’clock in the morning, came up to me and says, ‘Hey listen, I have an idea.’ When Rudy has an idea, it’s usually pretty good. It was that I should go to the prop master, another genius part of our show, and have them make some elephant ears.
The first thing we see is Nina’s reaction, so what if I was completely naked and we had elephant ears and double-stick tape, and I put them on each of my thighs, and ultimately, she would be staring at a very small, young elephant. The reaction that we got was f—ing amazing. I hope and pray that that is what we used in the edit because it was such a natural ‘Ohmygod!’ reaction.”
That playful chemistry between rumored real-life couple Somerhalder and Dobrev will serve them well in TVD‘s third season when Elena and Damon spend more time together looking for Stefan (Paul Wesley). At the end of season 2, to save Damon from a terminal werewolf bite, Stefan agreed to become the ripper wingman for badass vampire Klaus (Joseph Morgan), who succeeded in breaking the curse that kept his werewolf side dormant — so now he’s an even more badass hybrid. “Klaus definitely has a master plan, but I think the interesting surprise will be that his interest in Stefan is actually more personal than it is diabolical,” exec producer Julie Plec says. “I don’t mean that in a homoerotic way. Which would be awesome, too, I’m sure.” While we await the answer to that mystery, here’s a recap of other season 3 teases…
• Klaus and Stefan are on the road, racking up a body count. We know their travels take them to Tennessee, where they find werewolf Ray Sutton, played by 7th Heaven‘s David Gallagher, who’s told us that encounter does not end well for him. Stefan is still a reluctant ripper at this point. “At this point, he just wants to keep his brother and his girlfriend away from Klaus. It’s an interesting line that I walk in these scenes where bad things are happening,” Wesley says. “I have to ask myself how much I’m enjoying this and how much I’m reluctant to do. I honestly think it’s a 50/50 thing. Stefan is doing all of these bad things because Klaus is forcing it upon him. But there’s a weird level of enjoyment because he’s a vampire and he has a dark side.”
By episode 3, something happens that turns Stefan into a guilt-free ripper, which Wesley loves. “The truth is, I can be a dark guy like any other, but I love humor, and I love goofing off, and I love being silly, and playing a character that’s constantly burdened for years, it can be a little depressing after a while. To play a character who has absolutely no conscience, that literally felt like taking a load off my shoulders,” he says. “I think people underestimate how dangerous and complex Stefan is. Because he doesn’t have the funny little one-liners and sarcasm, people assume he’s less of a threat. But in reality, I think he’s more of a threat because he doesn’t wear his emotions on his sleeve, so to speak … There’s a lot of hidden darkness about Stefan that I think people will be pleased and surprised to see. To make it really simple, I’m kind of sick of always doing the right thing,” he laughs.
• The season premiere features Elena’s 18th birthday party, which Dobrev told us all about here. In short, her friends want her to move on and let Stefan go, but she can’t and won’t.
• Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen), who was brought back to life by witch girlfriend Bonnie (Kat Graham) in the season finale, is still seeing the ghosts of his two dead ex-girlfriends and hasn’t figure out why they’re haunting him. As Plec told us, Matt (Zach Roerig) will be one of the first people Jeremy shares his secret with. “One of the loves of Jeremy’s life visiting him from beyond the grave is Matt’s sister Vicki, who he never really had complete closure with. So he is gonna have, with Jeremy, an emotional journey in this supernatural world as he learns that his sister’s out there and contactable and tries to convince Jeremy to help him get the closure that he’s needed.”
• That situation will also obviously complicate Bonnie’s relationship with Jeremy. But Bonnie will have more to worry about as the season progresses. “We’re digging into the history of the Original family as we get deeper into the season and, of course, there was a witch who put that curse on Klaus in the first place, and [she] was a very powerful foe back in the beginning of the Originals’ time. We’re even going as far as to call her the Original Witch, just as a label to put on her. Bonnie will be part of helping us unravel that whole story,” Plec says.
• As producers have already revealed, vampire Caroline (Candice Accola) and werewolf Tyler (Michael Trevino) are on their way to becoming a supernatural Romeo and Juliet. “As Kevin [Williamson] and I say, we just want to see some hot werewolf-vampire sex,” Plec laughs.
• After Aunt Jenna’s death during Klaus’ sacrifice ritual, Alaric (Matt Davis) is trying to define his sense of emotional obligation to Elena and Jeremy. In episode 2, he and Elena will head to the mountains to follow-up on a lead about Stefan.
• While the majority of this season’s flashbacks will be centered around the origins story of Klaus and his family (bring back Daniel Gillies’ Elijah!), the first flashback episode — the season’s third ep, airing Sept. 29 — reveals Stefan’s shocking past in 1920s Chicago after he’s reunited with a vampire ex (Pretty Little Liars‘ Claire Holt). “She is someone who was involved with him when he was at his darkest and dirtiest, and now that he’s back on the circuit, she comes around looking to maybe reignite their relationship. She’s a part of his past that he had put away and now has to revisit,” Plec says. (Damon won’t be in that flashback. “The ’20s and ’70s are my favorite periods,” Somerhalder says. “I was kinda bummed, but then I got over it and realized it wouldn’t have really made sense in this part of the story. Maybe in the ’70s, Damon will be chilling at a really awesome Rolling Stones concert.”)
• Look for two other guest stars to shake things up in the first chapter of season 3 (roughly the first nine episodes). At some point, we’ll meet “a very mysterious man who appears to be hunting vampires, most specifically Klaus” played by Supernatural‘s Sebastian Roche. We’ll also be introduced to a former Mystic Falls resident (Heroes‘ Jack Coleman) who returns to point out all the failings of the current Council’s attempts to keep vampires out-of-town.

Here's a new Ian Somerhalder interview.
There are a lot of practical jokes on the set of The Vampire Diaries, but it’s tough to imagine anything topping the one Ian Somerhalder played on Nina Dobrev while shooting tonight’s season 3 premiere (The CW, 8 p.m. ET). Dobrev actually told EW about it first but insisted we ask Somerhalder for the full story.
It happened when they were filming the scene where a naked, sudsy Damon surprises Elena. “Well, you know, you open up the cover page of season 3, episode 1, and it’s, like, the first half a page, Damon’s already naked. Ian Somerhalder Talks 'Vampire Diaries' Season 3: Drama, Nudity & More
After last season's huge cliffhanger finale -- hell, cliffhanger season -- we're now faced with some big changes over at 'The Vampire Diaries.' Stefan is bad, Damon is good ... oh, this is gonna be fun.
I caught up with star Ian Somerhalder to talk all about Damon's latest dilemma: Having to take care of the girl he loves but can never have.
He also teased some more Damon drama in Season 3 (premieres Thurs., Sept. 15, 8PM ET on The CW), including how "pissed off" he is that his brother Stefan has taken off with that "prick" Klaus, and why Damon's annoyed with the idea of spending another three-quarters of a century in Mystic Falls.
Then we dished about the status of the Damon-Alaric bromance, all the nude scenes he's had this season and how, personally, he's enjoying the simple pleasures in life with his on-screen temptress and off-screen girlfriend Nina Dobrev.
What can you tease about the Season 3 premiere? Anything that will set the tone for this season?
Um, well Damon's naked. [Laughs] That sets a tone. I spent a couple of days naked on set, which always brings you closer to your fellow grips and electricians ... which is pretty awesome. [Laughs] Such a strange statement.
[Laughs] Well it sounds like you all have been listening to your fans ...
I've had my head so buried in working! But the premiere is so indicative of 'Vampire Diaries' -- a lot happens in the 48 minutes that the show airs. Season 1 was just incredible storytelling, and Season 2 was a season of a lot of mythology -- it set up a lot of what we're doing for the next 80 episodes or whatever we get, provided they don't cancel us. But I think ultimately, Stefan and Klaus pose very serious issues. Stefan's gone to that other place, and Damon's seen this before ... he knows, he's seen his brother. So one thing that Damon's feeling, in all honesty, plain and simple is he's pretty annoyed. He's pretty pissed off. He's angry because I don't think he ever saw his life ending up this way.
And that could take a while, getting Stefan back, right?
Yeah, and Damon's a little more realistic about how long it's actually gonna take to get Stefan back to the place where we need him to be. So, you know, Damon's got to do things he doesn't want to do. It's not a role or job that he wants to accept, and so I think there's kind of a big misconception there. He keeps getting pushed into sort of this hero role, and he doesn't want it. It's the sort of thing where, when Damon's frustrated and annoyed, what does he do? It's pretty sadistic to say, but he goes and rips some beautiful girl's neck open and gulps her down. But he can't do that anymore, and that pisses him off!
Because Stefan is doing it for him. It's almost like one of them is forced to behave if the other one is being bad -- that's their balance.
Damon tried for two seasons to get his brother to do that exact thing! To run around and eat every sorority girl and just destroy everything in their path, to no avail. Stefan wanted nothing to do with it. Now Stefan's running around doing that exact thing with Klaus, who's a prick. Damon hates him -- he tried to kill him! So you can see the world of frustration in which Damon is living.
If Damon is so frustrated, how much time does he have to take advantage of having Elena all to himself? Yeah, you know, it's definitely crossed his mind. When the cat's away, the mice will play. But he's doing the right thing. He's trying to get him back. And, you know what's cool about this? Damon and Elena, their banter ... sometimes they sound like a little old married couple. They fight back and forth with each other, and it's pretty darn cute. Damon gives her something, I think, that Stefan doesn't necessarily anymore: he makes her smile.
Obviously a lot of the first part of the season will be tracking down Stefan and Klaus and protecting Elena, but who else has Damon gotten to play with.
Really just Elena. Well, Elena and Alaric. The bromance continues!
[Laughs] People were actually hoping that maybe a Tyler-Damon bromance might build as well, out of all the tension. That would be fun, man, because he could do all these cool hybrid things!
Well, on a personal note, I'm so happy that you and Nina are finally talking about being a couple in real life. You've kept things under wraps for so long, is it kind of a sigh of relief that you can finally just admit you're dating?
[Laughs] Well, I will say that when you spend that much time around someone ... this is like a family. We spend a lot of time doing what we do. And in whatever capacity we hang out, it's very nice to simply enjoy the simple pleasures of life with the people that you hold dear and want to spend time with. It could be a lot worse.

The star of the CW series tells THR that even though Damon wants Elena, "he's being selfless" by helping her find Stefan. "She's no longer letting the men in her life dictate what happens. She's going to rise up and become a woman and fight," Dobrev says.
